Monkey Puppy

By Rich Hollman

This is the story of Gracie the monkey and Vadie the puppy.  Vadie the puppy worked in a banana factory where they made nothing but bananas.  Vadie would take yellow banana peels and banana mush and make bananas by putting the banana mush inside the yellow peels.  He would make a bunch of bananas and put them into a box to sell.  Vadie the puppy loved working at the banana factory.  It was super fun for him but of course, as a puppy he didn’t actually eat bananas.  He didn’t like bananas at all.

Gracie the monkey worked in a bone store.   All she did was sell bones, all different kinds of bones… big ones, small ones, barbeque ones and sweet ones.  Gracie was a monkey.  She didn’t like bones at all and every day she would go home with a big box of bones but she wanted nothing to do with them.

One day, Gracie decided to go swimming in the local lake.  She went down to the lake and she had a whole bunch of bones with her.  She went swimming in the lake and she dove down, down, down and saw a whole bunch of fish.  When she came up for air, there was a puppy standing in front of her.  And that puppy was Vadie.  He said, “Hello Monkey! My name’s Vadie, I’m a puppy!” and Gracie said, “Hello puppy, my name’s Gracie and I’m a monkey!”  Gracie asked him, “What are you doing?”  Vadie said, “I’m swimming.  I’m just swimming in the lake.” So they went swimming together and became friends, just like that!

After swimming, Vadie and Gracie became very hungry so they went over to a little food cart.  But the food cart vendor had nothing they wanted to eat.  But then Gracie said, “hey, I’m a monkey and I work at a bone store.  I’ve got all of these bones but I don’t want them.  You’re a puppy Vadie, don’t puppies eat bones?”  Vadie said, “Yes, I love bones!  I dream of chewing on bones!  I go to sleep at night and I dream that I’m standing on a mountain of bones.  That’s all I want to eat!”

Gracie said, “Well, here you go.  Enjoy this big box of bones.”  She gave Vadie the puppy all of her bones to chew and eat.  Vadie was so happy and that he thought, “Well, I want to repay the favor.”  He said to Gracie, “I work in a banana factory.  Would you like a banana?”   Gracie went crazy with monkey excitement!  “Oh!” Gracie said, “All I want to eat is bananas.  I fall asleep and I dream about eating mountains of bananas!  I peel them, I fry them up, I bake them, I put them in the microwave too and I eat them!  Any way you can give me bananas, I will eat them.  I love bananas!”  Vadie said, “Well, come on over here and get some bananas!”  Vadie and Gracie looked in Vadie’s backpack and it was filled with bananas.  Gracie smiled from eat to ear.  She said, “Are you serious?  I can have all of these bananas?”  And Vadie said, “Of course!  You gave me all of your bones.”
Gracie got all of the bananas from Vadie and ate the bananas right there on the beach.  She was so happy and very full.  The next day Gracie called Vadie on the telephone and said, “Hey, I want to give you a tour of the bone store.  You’ll love it.”  So, Vadie came over and toured the bone store.  He said, “I never want to leave. I love it here” and Gracie said, “Well, we’re actually hiring somebody.  Would you like to work in the bone store?”  Vadie said, “Yes, yes!  I want to work here.  How can I ever return the favor?”  Gracie said, “well you know what?  If you work at the bone store maybe I could get your job at the banana factory!”  Vadie said, “Yes, that’s a great idea!”

So, Vadie showed Gracie around the banana factory and Gracie said, “This is exactly where I want to work.  I want to make bananas and eat bananas.  I want to live in this banana factory!”

After that, Vadie and Gracie became great, great friends and not only did they both love their new jobs, they had unlimited bones and bananas for the rest of their lives.
